How to Become a Great Data Scientist? – John Sonmez Blogging Course

June 9, 2018 By Pascal Schmidt personal

As a Data Scientist who is just starting out in the industry, I was asking myself how I could improve my data science skills. So, I dug through the internet and came across Udemy, Coursera, and Data Camp. Certainly, great resources. However, would these courses make me the ultimate Data Scientist? 😊

My Path to Creating a Blog With The Help of John Sonmez’s Blogging Course

Probably not I thought and continued my search. I started with Kaggle. It is a great website for data science challenges. There are so many data sets to explore and competitions to try, that it is truly a data science heaven. Now I asked myself, is there still something better than heaven??? I doubt it, but I really want to master the difficult skill set a Data Scientist must-have.

So, let’s have another look through the internet. I was already familiar with John Sonmez and his blog. He also has a YouTube channel on which he is often highlighting the benefits of having a blog. Maybe I have found the right project to foster my skills?! But let’s hold on. Is one data point enough to decide to create a blog? Mmmh I was skeptical. Therefore, I looked through the internet again and found a blog post of Data Camp’s Chief Data Scientist. In his blog post, he explained that the best advice to aspiring Data Scientists is to create a blog.

Oh wow, I guess I have two data points now. One is from a great C++ programmer and the other one from a Chief Data Scientist. Long story short, NOW I decided to create a blog.

However, there are so many questions. Where should I start? Should I buy my own domain? Should I buy my own server? Should I build my own website? What theme should my blog be about and many more questions? Thankfully, John Sonmez had a free blogging course out which walked me through all the steps. It was great help and I can highly recommend his free blogging course.

Benefits of Having a Blog

I decided that my blog should be about my personal experience in the field of Data Science, at work, and in school. I also wanted it to be about my personal projects and tutorials. It is also about me not understanding a subject and then writing about this subject a 2,000-word piece. This greatly helped me to pick up topics I was not familiar with and makes me pick up these topics extremely well.

Try it out. I can highly recommend it. It enhances your learning and you’ll build up great skills. I am certainly enjoying it and it helped me a lot to pick up new concepts quicker. Enjoy!
